Distractions are what keep you in procrastination mode.

“You don’t have any idea of what’s like… I’m homeschooling my children,” I’ve had clients tell me.

They’re right… I’ve never had children.

HOWEVER, I have a pretty good idea of what it’s like to be distracted.

Many parents use their kids as an excuse to stay distracted. They don’t discipline themselves. They don’t discipline their children. They let them walk in and out of their office anytime and that’s no way to run an enterprise.

Overcoming Distractions

If you have a lot of distractions in your life, there’s a high probability that a huge percentage of your most valuable commodity… TIME… is being borrowed, stripped away, or taken from you.

If you don’t eliminate distractions, the distractions actually end up becoming your identity.

What are some of the main distractions that affect you?

Here is the biggest one. You process. We’re not really present in a conversation. You’re looking out the window. You pay attention to every situation that’s required except the task at hand.

The words you use to keep you distracted are…

“Uh, huh.”

The most powerful word in the English language when it comes to transformation is “YES.” Get comfortable saying, “Yes.” Saying “yes” will assist you to eliminate a lot of distractions.

Are you going to your company’s convention this year? “Well, if something doesn’t get in the way, I’ll be there.” Um, I’ll give it a shot.” ”Okay, I’ll try.” So many of us let life get in the way. If this is true of you, time is your enemy rather than your ally.

Another major distraction is spending excessive amounts of time online. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and SnapChat have become huge distractions for a large percentage of the population. While social media is important, you don’t want to be distracted by it when you are producing. If you let that take you out of your rhythm, you’ll have a challenge getting back into it.

Eliminating distractions will give you a direct experience of the words “letting go.”

When you let go of distractions, you’re in the present.

You’re in the moment.

You unequivocally, deserve to receive, and you’re in the place to do so.

Distractions rob you of your energy because they rob you of your focus. It’s your responsibility to stay in the present and eliminate as many distractions as you possibly can. When you decide to change, it’s amazing, because a lot of the people in your circle of influence sense it. They may not know exactly what it means, but they definitely feel it and respond accordingly.

On the other hand, if you let distractions become your identity, what you’ve created tells others, “I am distractible.”

Eliminating distractions is a commitment. It is a decision. And it’s absolutely, unequivocally a skill you require to master because if you don’t, you will let the wind blow and all of a sudden you will be off course.

You have to have bounce-back ability. You have to feel comfortable about who you are and what you’re becoming so that you can eliminate the distractions.

Write Things Down

Part of eliminating distractions means keeping an organized list assists you to develop much more clarity. Way too many people operate like a spinning top, scattered in all directions.

They end up being late for meetings. They’re late for the airport. They forget appointments. They can’t find their cell phone with all their contacts, they forget to pay a bill, or they experience a multitude of other situations because of their disorganization.

Being organized is a skill.

If you’re not organized, there’s a high probability that you are rebelling against your own success.

Getting organized means keeping lists. You might use a Day-Timer or you might prefer to keep your lists and appointments online.

You CAN’T operate on a scrap of paper.

Your Method of Operation

You have to have a method.

I use a very simple At-a-Glance® black spiral book that I can pick up at any office store every year. I have a stack of them going back all the way to 1998. I break my time down by the hour. I get up at a certain time every single day.

Yes… I am a creature of habit. Many people ask, “Isn’t that boring?” Usually that person is broke or broken and is not a creature of routines.

To become successful in any endeavor, you must understand success principles. You must develop habits, routines, skills, and a mindset that will allow you to succeed in the particular vocation that you have chosen. If you don’t, you set yourself up to become a procrastinator.

Many of my clients call me to tell me they have forgotten our coaching appointment, or their computer crashed, or they have lost their phone. Fortunately for them, I am organized. I have all of my coaching clients organized in my calendar.

I am low-tech, big-check.

I’m one of those old-school kind of guys.

I still like good old-fashioned legal pads and Cross pens. I love black ink on yellow paper. This might not be your niche, but you have to find a way to be organized.

Begin to affirm: “I am organized. Organizing my life is easy.”

The way you live and the way you operate usually are in direct proportion to the person you have become.
